Casa La Big Sur

The elegant Balinese architecture of Casa Big Sur was built with reinforced block and concrete to create a house that is not only structurally sound but is impervious to moisture and mildew. Built by highly qualified local contractors under the direct supervision of Ben Morris and Leif Bernhardt, Casa Big Sur also utilizes innovative wood and glass Euromat windows and sliding door panels from Germany that open up the walls in a seamless integration of outdoor and indoor living spaces.

A multi-layered insulated roof was used to reduce heat absorption and to keep the interior cool from the intense rays of the tropical sun. Covered with Pescadera ceramic tiles, the roof is not only beautiful but highly functional at preventing rain intrusion reminiscent of what has been used with great success at the Four Seasons Resort at Peninsula Papagayo.

Throughout Casa Big Sur it will quickly become evident that many of the appliances and fixtures have been imported due to their familiarity and outstanding reliability. Energy Star rated GE Profile appliances can be found in the gourmet kitchen and Kohler fixtures can be found throughout the kitchen and bathrooms as well. Low Flow toilets have been utilized to help reduce unnecessary waste of the precious Costa Rican natural water supply and many of the fixtures are water efficient as well.

Energy efficient Hinkley lighting provides light throughout the house and custom hanging chandeliers provide a touch of elegance and a relaxing ambiance in the main living areas that is unique to Casa Big Sur. Coupled with the custom lighting, Monte Carlo ceiling fans are used to provide cooling breezes and to enhance interior air flow on days when the windows and doors are open to capture the wonderful natural breezes coming off the mountain. Of course, the Daikin central air conditioning is also available to quickly and efficiently provide a cool escape from extreme temperatures on those particularly hot and sunny tropical days.

From the moment you enter, it is also obvious that no expense was spared when selecting the interior finishes at Casa Big Sur. The designers of Casa Big Sur are very passionate about using quality natural materials, and this is evident as you move through the home. Turkish travertine tiles have been installed throughout, and the master bedroom floors are inlaid with manglio hardwood, a locally sourced wood that perfectly exhibits the character of Costa Rica and ties Casa Big Sur into its surroundings.

The use of locally sourced hardwoods is extensive at Casa Big Sur, and you will find custom cedro cabinets and teak tongue and groove ceilings with structurally reinforced Eucalyptus beams everywhere you look. Teak has even been incorporated to rest upon the custom designed wrought iron handrails to further enhance the unique character of Casa Big Sur.

Natural stone was used extensively both within the house and on the grounds of Casa Big Sur. Exotic granite countertops are found throughout the house, and crema marfil stone veneer and rustic travertine vessels create a warm and inviting atmosphere in each of the bathrooms. Crema marfil tile was used in the infinity edge pool as well to tie the interior design to the exterior and the surrounding pool deck and staircases are covered with natural Coralina stone.

In the quest to create the perfect getaway no detail, big or small, was overlooked. From the overall construction to the smallest detail, Casa Big Sur is truly a work of architectural craftsmanship.
